  • Body Composition Scan (BIA) is a scan using microelectric current at multiple frequencies (you cannot feel the current) to establish body weight, body fat mass, muscle mass, bone mass intra and intercellular water. This scan is very helpful when tracking how effective changes in your lifestyle such as diet and exercise are at improving your health. Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) is a valuable tool for measuring your body composition—the measurement of body fat in relation to lean body mass. It is an important part of any comprehensive health and nutrition assessment. Why is body composition important to your health? A normal balance of body fat to lean body mass is associated with good health and longevity. Excess fat in relation to lean body mass, a condition known as altered body composition, can greatly increase your risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and more. BIA enables early detection of animproper balance in your body composition, which allows for earlier intervention and prevention. BIA also provides the measurement of fluid and body mass that can be a critical assessment tool for your current state of health. BIA serves to measure your progress as you work to improve your health. Improving your BIA measurement, or maintaining a healthy BIA measurement, can help keep your body functioning properly for healthy ageing and reduced risk of illness. With your BIA results, we can recommend a personalised dietary plan, nutritional supplements, and exercise to help support optimal health and well-being for a lifetime. How does BIA work? BIA is much more sophisticated than your bathroom scale, but just as painless-and almost as quick. BIA is a simple procedure performed in our clinic in a matter of minutes with the help of a sophisticated computerised analysis. Measurements are taken with the bioimpedance analyzer, which uses electrodes similar to EKG electrodes. The analyzer calculates your tissue and fluid compartments using an imperceptible electrical current passed through your hands and feet. Lean tissue, which is over 70% water, is a good conductor of electrical current. Fatty tissue, which is low in water, is not. Thus, the resistance to the flow of electrical current measured by the analyzer can be used to calculate the body composition. Optimal body fat ranges from 15% to 25% for women and 10% to 20% for men. Over 100 independent studies conducted over the past 20 years have demonstrated that BIA can provide an accurate and clinically useful assessment of body composition. IMPORTANT: Please maintain a normal level of hydration and avoid exercise in the three hours before the test.

    Haleema Sheikh
    Haleema Sheikh

Haleema Sheikh has been working as medical doctor in UK healthcare for 20 years now and as a GP for 12 years. She qualified from St George’s Hospital Medical School in 1998 and went on to complete her MRCP in 2001 with an aim to specialise in hospital medicine (haematology). However she soon realised that she did not want to just concentrate on one body system and so changed career paths to General Practice to consider patients more holistically in the context of their family and community.

Over the last few years Haleema became increasingly aware of the significant rise in chronic health conditions, autoimmunity and non-communicable disease and was frustrated at not having a clear framework to navigate patients back to health. This led her to explore Functional Medicine which offers a new systematic framework when searching for the root cause of symptoms; with a particular focus in on how lifestyle can be a critical factor in creating and optimising health. In evolutionary terms, our genes have not adapted to modern lifestyle, indeed it was not very long ago in human history that we had to catch our food and forage for nutrition. We did not have access to refrigerated food, 24 hour light and the technology that pervades the modern world and allows us to order pretty much anything to our sofa.

We have enormous power to change our health.

Haleema is passionate about using her medical knowledge and training to help clients to locate the root cause(s) of their symptoms and hack their health to create a nurturing environment in which their cells can thrive

Carmen’s passion for food is inspired by her Spanish roots where preparing and eating fresh food in the company of family and friends is the norm.  This passion led her to study Anatomy and Physiology in order to understand the mechanics of the human body. However, as the body does not exist on its own, she learned Yoga, Meditation, Reiki and other alternative therapies to explore the connection between  mind, body and spirit and how food affects our thoughts, behaviour and mood.

Carmen has been practising for more than 12 years and her science-based approach helps her identify and address the underlying causes of both physical and psychological imbalances in the body which may be causing symptoms and illness.  She specialises in digestive issues and gut health, hormonal imbalances and detoxification.
